No, you do need a referral to see a psychologist. You are able to access psychological services as a standard fee paying client.
However, if you decide to get a Mental Health Care Plan under the Better Access Scheme from your GP, you become eligible for a Medicare rebate.
It is helpful to book in a longer appointment with your GP and let them know that you are seeking a Mental Health Care Plan. Alternatively, a psychiatrist or paediatrician is also able to refer to a psychologist under Medicare, but most medical professionals prefer for your care to be centrally coordinated by your GP.
Initial assessment $330 (90 minutes).
Standard appointment $250 (50 minutes).
Fees are payable on the day of the appointment and Alex is able to process payments online on your behalf. No cash is kept on the premises.
If you have a Mental Health Care Plan, the Medicare rebate is processed online for you. Medicare will then pay the rebate amount into your nominated bank account. The gap fee (which is the difference between the session fee and the rebate) is payable by you.
Medicare provides rebates for psychological services for people with certain psychological conditions through the Better Access To Mental Health Care scheme.
Under this scheme a referral may be provided by a general practitioner, psychiatrist, or paediatrician. They will assess your eligibility for a Mental Health Care Plan, and provide you with paperwork to bring to your first appointment.
Your Mental Health Care Plan will allow up to 10 sessions per calendar year. Your GP will assess progress after six sessions and determine whether additional sessions would be of benefit.
As of July 1 2024, Clinical Psychologists attract a Medicare rebate of $141.85 per standard session, if you have a current Mental Health Care Plan.
Depending on your cover, most private health funds will support psychological therapy. Please contact your health insurance company directly and get clarity on what you are covered for, and what funding they offer.
Note: you are not able to use your Private Health cover and a Medicare rebate for the same appointment
